Probe-Übersetzung des Musicals von Alanis Morissette, Glen Ballard und Diablo Cody für Concord Theatricals Berlin.
Es entstanden deutsche Fassungen von mehreren Songs, von denen einige bei der "schreib:maschine" in der Neuköllner Oper in Berlin im September 2020 zum ersten Mal präsentiert wurden. Das Stück basiert auf Morissettes Erfolgs-Album "Jagged Little Pill", das 2020 25-jähriges Jubiläum feierte. "Jagged Little Pill" erzählt die Geschichte der Familie Healy. Eine nach außen hin perfekte Familie, bei der doch einige Konflikte unter der Oberfläche brodeln. Die Beziehung zwischen den Eltern ist nicht mehr das, was sie einmal war und sowohl Sohn Nick als auch die Adoptivtochter Frankie kämpfen mit ihren ganz eigenen Problemen. |

Alanis Morissettes Album "Jagged Little Pill" (1995) ist bis heute unvergessen – und es kommt nun zu neuer Blüte: Im Mai 2018 wird das gleichnamige Musical am American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, Massachusetts Premiere feiern.
Damit wird ein Projekt Wirklichkeit, von dem die Sängerin bereits 2013 sprach. Und das Warten hat sich anscheinend gelohnt, denn die Macher der Musical-Produktion versprechen einiges: Regie führt Tony-Gewinnerin Diane Paulus, das Buch wurde geschrieben von Diablo Cody ("Juno"), Orchestrierung und Arrangements kommen von Tony- und Pulitzer-Preisträger Tom Kitt, der schon erfolgreich an Green Days "American Idiot"-Adaption mitarbeitete. In einer Pressemitteilung schreibt Alanis Morissette dazu: "Das Team, das sich für dieses 'Jagged Little Pill'-Musical zusammengefunden hat, ist die Erfüllung meines Musical-Theater-Traumes. Die Chemie zwischen uns allen knistert und ich fühle mich geehrt, noch einmal die Songs abzutauchen, umgeben von so viel Talent. Diablo und Diane bringen diese zutiefst persönlichen Songs, die Teil des Innersten meiner Seele sind, bereits auf ein komplett neues Level der Hoffnung, Freiheit und Vielschichtigkeit." "The problem with most jukebox musicals isn’t the juke, it’s the box. The tunes are fine, but they rarely match the container that someone is trying to jam them into. How could they? Commercial pop and musical theater have different kinds of tales to tell and different tools for telling them.
So it’s easy to imagine all the ways 'Jagged Little Pill' could have gone wrong. Based on material from Alanis Morissette’s 1995 megahit album and several of its follow-ups, it could have wound up in a bio-musical straitjacket or with a story either too light for the songs’ furious intelligence or too broad for Broadway. [...] The great news for 'Jagged Little Pill,' and for us, is that [...] the overhauled version that opened on Thursday at the Broadhurst Theater is fully in focus: clear in its priorities, rich in character, sincere without syrup, rousing and real. "It would be an insult to call this stage adaptation a jukebox musical, because unlike most specimens of that theatrical genre, the story seems to emerge organically from the music.
Both structurally and thematically, comparisons to the 2008 musical 'Next to Normal' by Brian Yorkey and Tom Kitt are probably inevitable. (In each show, an all-American family is profoundly challenged by a mother suffering from a debilitating condition.) But Morissette’s youthful perspective and the rocking-good score make 'Jagged Little Pill' feel very much of the moment — this moment. [...] What makes this musical so seriously smart is the way that some of the most beloved songs from Morissette’s iconic album come right out of the dramatic content, rather than being slapped on top of a wobbly book scene. 'Ironic,' for one clever example, becomes a poem that Frankie is unsuccessfully trying to read out loud in class, hooted down by classmates who point out that the examples she uses in her poem are not, in fact, ironic. [...] 'So Unsexy,' another good example of creative transformation, is here sung (beautifully) by Sean Allan Krill as Steve Healy, mourning the loss of passion in his marriage to Mary Jane, the wife he still adores. 'How these little abandonments / Seem to sting so easily / Your hand pulling away / And I’m devastated' seem more tragic, somehow, coming from a long-married man longing for the lost love of his life.
